Atlas of 175 Western Cities and Towns [cover title: Atlas of Cities and Towns in the Western States]
Giving Contact with Reliable Real Estate Brokers.
Oakland: Thomas Bros., (n.d but circa 1928).
A three-volume atlas screw-bound into stiff leatherette covers (labeled volume one, but actually incorporating all three sections). This atlas includes approximately 125 blueprint maps of towns in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Utah; two wall maps of the Los Angeles area; and two colored maps.
SOLD
The blueprint maps (measuring 19 by 24 inches) are surrounded by ads for real estate brokers, many of which have two digit phone numbers (which suggest an early date). The wall map "Los Angeles and Vicinity" is dissected and mounted on five strips of cloth. The sections each measure 19 by 51 inches. A smaller wall map, in two sections, covers Pasadena and the surrounding cities.
This atlas was apparently put together as it was ordered, in order to incorporate the latest maps. OCLC records four copies of this atlas (three in city library collections and a defective copy, lacking the Los Angeles wall maps, at the California State Library), and offers a publication date between 1928 and 1937. In this copy of the atlas, only a handful of maps bear dates, and they are all 1928. A note on the initial index page (which serves as a title page), indicates that a new index will be supplied when sections 2 and 3 are completed. This atlas includes those sections with a separate index.
The pagination of the atlas is somewhat confusing, as it starts anew with each state, and there is some duplication of page numbers, which probably occurred when a map was replaced.
The atlas is missing two leaves, which had the Eureka, Santa Rosa, and the US maps. The covers are in very good condition, with some wear at the edges. A few maps have edge tears, but the majority are in excellent condition.
