This dictionary, a key publication in the Hupa Tribe's effort to preserve its language, is based on the vocabulary known by the surviving fluent speakers, supplemented with anthropological work conducted Pliny Earle Goddard between 1897 and 1900, Edward Sapir's Hupa vocabulary compiled in 1927, and Victor Golla's word lists compiled in the 1960s, all supplemented with linguistic studies conducted in the 1990s. This is a scarce publication, distributed primarily to tribal members. Illustrated with contemporary photographs of Hupa Indians. The library database OCLC records just six copies (38907056, 225306051) of this edition and only two of the 1983 edition. Very good in wrappers (paperback).
